This is the second artwork (of 4) in the series of "cultural portraits" that I’m working on. The narrative in this piece basically consists of a person being transformed. They are essentially struggling with this experience, too, as the abstract imagery suggests.

After finishing the lessons in Scott Kelby’s "7-Point System for Adobe Photoshop CS3", I had to go back and revisit some of my older stuff.

I started with this JPG image, adjusted the foreground using Camera RAW and then made another image in Camera RAW and adjusted the sky.

I merged the two images in Photoshop and then darkened the sky, lightened the foreground, desaturated the blues and yellows a tad, etc.

It’s not remotely realistic. The sky is pretty dark for an image that’s looking right at the sun.

Oh… and if it looks familiar, it’s because I did another HDR Version months ago.

Our intrepid Meiji-era photographer thought that he’d just touch up the seated Geisha’s kimono a bit. Perhaps add some color enhancement with a new, experimental yellow-green color his buddy made out of warm sake, ground up sugarcane leaves, a little lemon juice, a touch of epsom salts, a pinch of arsenic, and some sulfuric acid (?)

Oooops ! Well, it didn’t look that bad. Perhaps the new color could be brushed out to the edges….

Oooops ! Looks like she’s exchanged her kimono for a straw mat !

Ahhh, what the heck. He put it up for sale in his studio anyway, and some tourist actually bought it…..

……and 100 years later, another dummy puts it up on flickr.

Nice pose, though. On this photostream, you have to eat the meat, and spit out the bones.

The Commandments are fundamental in it’s guidance to us on how to relate first to God and then to man. In this age where moral relativism tells us that there is no universal standard that exists by which we can assess truth and morality, the Bible stands in the other corner and shouts..".there is absolute truth!" and they are all outlined in the commandments of God. If there are no absolute truth, then we can all go around and lie, steal, kill, have no respect for our parents or God and sleep around with each others wives, etc. with no perceived consequence or consideration for the judgment of God upon our lives.

The Commandments are God’s standard of morality and although we cannot live up to it, they still remain the standard. Thank God for Jesus who fulfilled the standard and went a step further by dying on the cross for our sins. if we believe in Him we have the assurance of eternal life when he returns.

I used a Wacom Pen & Touch, a lot of masking, had some fun with the colors. It took me about ~30 minutes of straight PS work.

I’m only just learning how to use the Wacom Tablet =)

Going Crazy With Photoshop

You can do some really strange things with images in Photoshop. On this image, I duplicated the background layer 2 times and changed the layer blending mode. Then I zoomed in each layer by a certain amount and also rotated each by a few degrees to the left from a center nodal point that I selected. Then I masked out all the changes to the center rear portion of the image so that it looks as it did originally. The result sort of makes it look as though the building is collapsing, but it is confusing to look at because the back portion in the distance is unaffected. It’s like a double exposure on all but the distant archway.

These types of manipulations can really do some interesting and strange things with certain images.

This is a Photoshop I did for my business, which can (at this writing) still be seen as the splash image for our website. I thought it was interesting because of how I pieced the elements together.

The shooters were photographed about six or eight months apart, against a white background (to make it easier for Photoshop masking). The guy in the back is a model I hired, while the hooded guy in the front is me. Both of us are holding the exact same Remington 870 Express Magnum fitted with my company’s stocks and rails.

The background is the basement of a shopping center in Brussels (!) I snapped back in 1999 or 2000 because it reminded me of Moria from the Lord of the Rings. I’ve posted several photos from that series in my Moria set.

In addition to the website splash, I also enlarged this image for trade show booth graphics.

Thanks partially to a lot of browsing around on Flickr, and practice, my Photoshop fu is much better than it was back then (2004), and if I made this image again today I think it would be a lot cleaner.
